This piece will be for sale at the Art Splash show at Black Rock Oceanfront Resort, Ucuelet BC, from Friday, March 20th to Sunday, March 29th. This painting took a lot longer that I expected but I am happy to be able to share the results with you all now! I always end up painting one or two toned pieces at this time of year because the whole world is that sad blue grey colour. I tried to portray a life and movement in this piece that is not distracted by intense colour. Also, the bubbles that they are blowing together serve as a metaphor for how we are all sharing the same air and are equals to all life around us. This is a photo that I took of a pair of Vermiculated Screech Owls in Costa Rica, last winter. I love how this picture captures the partnership between these two Owls. I think they look like an old married couple.

This is a watercolour painting of a California Quail. It took a tiny bit longer than I expected to paint because of the scaled feathers on the back of the neck, but I am happy with how it turned out! I painted this using Winsor & Newten paints and Sukura pens. This piece is 8" by 10", framed and for sale at $45

Christmas is coming and you know what that means! A brand new series of holiday cards. I love showing people the beautiful and sometimes overlooked birds of Tofino and the west coast.      This spring brake, my family and me went to West Mexico. It was so so so amazing to be able to see some of these beautiful birds, not to mention how nice it was to photograph them. The Nayarit aria has many endemics like the Citreoline Trogon and Golden-crowned Emerald. Enjoy!      I have been doing art for as long as I can remember but something that I just really got in to is photography. When I went to Costa Rica in 2015 I took lodes of photos, and I kind of took the hobby home with me. This year, for my Birth day my wonderful parents got me the new Nikon camera so I have been taking some really fun pictures with that. The Okanagan Valley turned out to be the photographers dream, this summer. Hear are some of the photos that i took, enjoy!

Oh my god, these paintings have been published by Melissa Hafting, in the December 2017 and the March 2018 issues of "B.C. Birding" magazine. Also, I am now on Instagram as calf_island. A male Hooded Merganser with a scarf, from the march issue. A female King Fisher, from the December.

     I love Cuckoos as you may know by my earlier post "Going Cuckoo". The Cuckoos that we have in Canada are the Yellow-billed Cuckoo and the Black-billed Cuckoo. If you were to compare this guy to any actual species it would be most similar to the Mangrove and the Squirrel Cuckoo. These birds seem kind of posh to me so I thought that they would match this tea very well.

     One of the suggestions that I received for a tea animal was a "coffee cheetah", this is obviously not exactly a tea animal but suggestions like this are welcome. The other piece is a Belted Kingfisher that was another request. Coffee Cheetah female Belted Kingfisher  

     Quail live all over Western North America. The kind of Quail that can be found in British Columbia is the California Quail. This is inspired by the Scaled Quail of the Southern U.S.A.. I have always thought that they seem so cozy. Chai tea seems the same, so I thought that they would be a perfect fit.

     I love owls and I love earl grey so hear are the results of mixing a bird with a drink, yet an other tea animal.

     Over the last few months I have developed a bit of a tea obsession, so I have decided to draw "tea animals" that will embody certain types of tea. The drawings of these animals will not be for sale. I will post these creatures as I create them and you can comment ideas for paintings involving the different tea animals, if I use one of your ideas to create a piece then it will be for sale. This is the Oolong Tea-lizard.

     Living on the West Coast, Belted Kingfishers are all over the place. Their loud and ruckus voices are almost always rattling over the water. The male has a blue and white breast, where as the female has a breast of blue, white and cinnamon. This is a female. This piece is 5" by 7" and for sale at $25 framed. SOLD

     I love Tufted Puffins, they are the funniest little clumsy clown like birds above the water but below the water they are streamline and elegant birds that seem to fly under the waves. I really wanted to portray the eye contact between the mother and the chick so that the bond was obvious. This piece is 5" by 7" and for sale at $25 framed. SOLD
